2012 Camp Theme
In the Zone
“Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think—according to the power that works in you” Ephesians 3:20
Theme Passage: Ephesians 3:1-21
Background to Theme:
Everyone at an athletic competition knows the moment it happens. The competitors can sense it; the coaches can only watch it and the fans are in awe of it. It’s the instant when an athlete takes his or her game to a higher level during the course of a contest. Something happens that catapults the athlete into a stage of competitive performance where every skill is performed with perfection and every move is executed flawlessly. The competitor’s confidence rises with every second that goes by…and he or she literally becomes unstoppable. The athlete is playing “In the Zone.”
God desires each one of us to live our lives “In the Zone” through an unstoppable faith. He calls us to a higher level of living that is much greater than simply living for ourselves. What would your team or sport look like if you lived your life “In the Zone” for the Lord? How would things change on your campus if you lived out an unstoppable faith in Jesus Christ? Is this level of spiritual influence possible? Absolutely! It’s time to live “In the Zone” for Jesus Christ!
Day 1: Surrendered in the Zone… God wants to save you (Ephesians 3:17)
Key Concept: It is by faith we are saved.
We’ve all been caught up in that moment when an athletic performance unexplainably defies logic. A basketball player goes off for 50 points and seems to hit every shot. A golfer makes birdie after birdie while leaving the rest of the field in his tracks. A sprinter charges out of the blocks, races past her competitors and destroys a world record in the process. As these athletes execute every skill with perfection and become unstoppable, we begin to sense what is happening. They have entered another realm of competition: they are “In the Zone.” Athletes do not wake up one day and suddenly begin competing in the zone. There were strategies and plans put into place by coaches that knew what would give them the best chance for success. Hours of sweat, sacrifice, and following the plan played into that pivotal moment of playing in the zone. The same is true in our walk with God. God calls us to a higher level of living through an unstoppable faith in Jesus Christ. His plans for us are greater that we can ever dream up on our own. But in order to live in the zone for Jesus Christ, it takes the same kind of total surrender that a world-class athlete gives to his or her coach. We must take the first step of surrendering to His plan of salvation and start on a daily journey of having a real relationship with Jesus Christ.
Day 2: Renewed in the Zone… God wants to heal you (Ephesians 3:17-19)
Key Concept: Love covers all sin. It is the ultimate healing and rehab process!
For athletes at every level, there’s perhaps nothing more disappointing then dealing with an injury or illness. This is especially true when it happens during the height of the season or right before a big contest. Even the best have to face the inevitable fact that they won’t always be 100 percent, and when that happens, you can be sure that the injured athlete, if they’re able to play at all, won’t likely be in the zone. In our walk with God, we too have to deal with spiritual injuries or illnesses that often come in the form of emotional hurts, nagging doubts and unforgiveness. Even after we’ve accepted Christ into our hearts, we still need to be renewed and healed of those things so we can be at full strength and live a powerful life for Him. Christ’s love allows us to overcome the injuries sin causes in our lives. This is the next step to being in the zone for Jesus Christ.
Day 3: Powerful in the Zone… God wants to fill you (Ephesians 3:19)
Key Concept: God can fill you with His power.
Every year, millions of dollars are made from the sale of sports drinks and energy bars. Big time sports stars are paid huge endorsement deals to drink and eat certain products that claim to allow athletes to perform at their highest level. Why? Because all athletes know that going into a workout or competition without the proper fuel for their bodies will result in a sub-par performance. If you want to be a powerful, dynamic follower of Christ, you too must be filled up with the right ingredient. And there’s nothing more potent than the power of God residing within you and guiding your every step. God wants to fill you with His power so you can live in the zone for Him.
Day 4: Unstoppable in the Zone…God wants to use you (Ephesians 3:20-21)
Key Concept: Our lives give glory to Him in all generations…unstoppable.
Such descriptive words as natural, unconscious, automatic, instinctive and unbeatable are often applied to athletes who are in the zone. Maybe you’ve heard this catch phrase before: “You can’t stop them. You can only hope to contain them.” God’s glory is unstoppable. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be spiritually in the zone as an unstoppable force for God’s Kingdom? Is that even possible? According to the Word, it’s something that’s not only achievable, but it’s a way of life that God desires for each of us. Once you have surrendered to God’s plan for your life and allowed him to heal any spiritual injuries in your life, He will then fill you with His power. You are now ready to be used by God at a level you never dreamed could happen. You will be an unstoppable force for God in this world, not because of you, but because of God’s power in you.
